Three Tips for Spine (and Life) Longevity
The median age in Naples, Florida is 67 years old (vs 39 in the general United States). We see patients in their 80s and 90s very frequently. Some look their age, but some look as if they are in their 50s. What is the secret to their success?
Activity (MOST important)
The healthiest patients are the ones that are active. The healthy 80- and 90- year olds are constantly doing physical activity. This can be simple such as taking a walk every morning with your significant other. Others play frequent sports (pickleball, golf, tennis) and workout. Keeping the body in motion is key. We see many patients with SEVERE degeneration of the spine have MINIMAL symptoms, all because of their healthy and active bodies. On the contrary, we see people with MILD degeneration have SEVERE symptoms, simply because they are unhealthy, de-conditioned, and out of shape.
With activity, make sure you maintain good posture: appropriate posture improves spinal alignment, reduces unnecessary strain, and prevents long-term damage to your vertebrae, muscles, and joints.
Core strengthening, aerobic exercise, and stretching all play a role.
Diet and Weight
Overweight patients increase the stress on their spines throughout their life. Studies have shown that just weight loss can help improve chronic back pain. A well-balanced diet and appropriate weight will keep your cardiovascular system and your musculoskeletal system happy and healthy.
Health Checkups
Healthy patients (as expected) get regular checkups. They get their recommended screenings. They get their bloodwork done a regular basis. This helps avoid nutritional deficiencies and helps prevent diseases such as osteoporosis.
Bonus: Several patients have also stated a POSITIVE outlook is key.
Longevity doesn’t just mean living longer—it means living better. By prioritizing your spine health through regular physical activity and constant, mindful movement, you’re investing in a healthier, more active future. These habits not only protect your spine but also contribute to better energy, mobility, and overall well-being.
